What is the MissionBox DoubleTake?

The MissionBox.com DoubleTake is an advice column that provides hard-to-find expert answers to real, day-to-day nonprofit challenges, mostly about unpredictable human interactions in the nonprofit workplace.

The questions asked are unique and trying, although not exclusive to nonprofits. When we deal with managing or working with people, we run into issues that perplex us. We all want to do the right thing, but often the right thing is nuanced and depends upon an exclusive set of circumstances and scenarios

We provide alternate views, so that you can access the advice that will be most helpful to you for your individual situation.

Nonprofits are interested in expert advice on pesky problems

Garnering the experience and advice of experts — folks who have lived and survived through these challenges, is a great resource to all of us. Advice columns can be like a visit to a wise man or woman in a tribal community. All humans have a deep history of being a part of a tribal community, in which the oldest or wisest person is a knowledge-sharer and is valued and consulted. In our post-industrial world, understanding gained through years of experience has been de-valued, but we still long for that resource in our lives.

Wisdom is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common sense, and insight. MissionBox is committed to providing wisdom, based on these attributes, regarding the troublesome moments of working in a nonprofit.

Do nonprofits have the corner on doing the "right thing" in the workplace?

The process of offering the right solution for nonprofit people issues is complicated by a general belief that folks who dedicate themselves to service are somehow kinder, better and more aware of the goodness in all of us — more in touch with the right thing to do in every circumstance than their corporate counterparts. But we all realize people, relationships, work and social interactions are rarely simple.

Few nonprofit executives are trained in legal, human resources, governance and operations upon entering the nonprofit arena. We are often there because we trained service providers and we care about our mission. What we do on a day-to-day basis is often learned the hard way — with years of experience.

And it’s easy, and often necessary, to keep a laser focus on funding and administration, rather than the people (staff, volunteers, interns, donors and board members) who help to fulfill that mission. There are only so many hours in the day.
